Unlike most trusses in conventionally built homes, timber frame trusses are typically exposed, intensifying the feeling of space and volume inside a room.

A timber truss is a key structural component that bridges the area over a room, while providing support for the roof. There are many styles and variations of each style. Below are the most common types of timber trusses, and how they are typically used.
The King Post Truss with struts is popular, timeless, very strong, and an elegantly simple truss design. As one of the most cost-effective designs, this truss is very adaptable with regard to desired span and roof pitch. Its bold appearance can serve as a focal point of a home’s design. Embellishments and radius cuts on the struts can be added for a more elegant look. This truss works well in a loft area, a great room or for an entryway.
The Raised King Post Truss is based on the popular king post truss design. A raised chord design pushes up the connection of the tie beam onto the rafters rather than connecting at the bottom edges of them. This design also features additional braces adding to the visual aesthetics and structural strength of the truss. This style can be embellished with radius cuts on the struts and a through tenon or pendant at the base of the king post.
A Hammer Beam Truss is both dramatic and complex. With its open-air center, the combination of heavy timbers, metal tie rods and turnbuckles are not only appealing but will usually be required to handle the spreading forces this truss configuration can develop. Hammer Beam Trusses create dramatic vaulted spaces with a cathedral quality and can be even further enhanced with embellishments.
The Queen Post Truss expands on a common truss with the addition of two posts dividing the gable. These posts are known as queen posts and work well for framing the upper windows in a great room and adding strength to the truss. These trusses can easily span thirty feet or more with the proper spacing.
A Scissor Truss is a traditional truss style with many variations. The scissor truss represents a departure from the other trusses It's offering is a unique design wherein two beams run from the lower part of one rafter to the upper part of the opposite rafter. These trusses have a complex geometry with many angled intersections and a higher center for added space. Scissor trusses are not recommended for shallow roof pitches.
In some cases, the king and queen post trusses are combined into one. The additional upright timbers on each side in these trusses are Queen Posts. This type of truss is known as a King and Queen Post Truss. This style can also be embellished with radius cuts on the struts and a through tenon or pendant at the base of the king post.
